‘#StolenMemory’ – a new exhibition in Łambinowice

From yesterday, 26 November, until the end of January 2025, the temporary exhibition ‘#StolenMemory’ is on view in front of the Museum building in Łambinowice. The form of this exhibition prepared by Arolsen Archives is as original as it is practical, as it is displayed in a recycled shipping container.

The purpose of the initiative is to restore the memory of the victims of Nazi persecution, who in the concentration camps lost not only their freedom, but also their dignity that they were stripped of by brutally taking away their personal items from them. The fact that deportations to the camps meant looting of belongings - from documents, photographs and letters to clothing and jewellery - is well known. However, the exhibition emphasizes yet another point. Namely, that all of these items had not only material meaning to everyone, above all they were of great importance to the victims and their families.

The Arolsen Archives, as an international centre on Nazi persecution, has been running the #StolenMemory campaign for several years now. Its aim is to locate descendants of former prisoners and return stolen memorabilia to them. Thanks to the commitment of volunteers from all over the world, more than 570 items have already been returned. The exhibition is designed to show both artefacts belonging to people whose families have already been found and those that have not yet been returned to their rightful hands. In addition, there is no lack of historical context concerning the German Nazi camp system. An important message of the exhibition is to encourage visitors to join an international group of volunteers searching for the families of the victims.

The exhibition is accompanied by educational materials, on the basis of which we have prepared interesting activities for children and young people. So if you are planning to visit us with a school group, for example, we recommend not only to come to see the Site of Remembrance and the exhibition, but also take advantage of these activities. The historical knowledge will then certainly stay with your pupils for a long time.
