‘Reverberations of 1944…’ - expert seminar by Maciej Żemojcin
As part of the project ‘Reverberations 1944. From Warsaw to Lamsdorf’, on 8 November this year, our Museum hosted a group of schoolgirls from the Public High School of Fine Arts in Opole. The purpose of the visit was to attend a seminar given by Maciej Żemojcin, an artist and film producer, who specialises is the creative use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Augmented Reality (AR) technologies in the making of feature films, series, documentaries and video installations.
The workshop’s part of the seminar was preceded by an introduction to the theme of the ‘Reverberations of 1944...’ project, by way of which Dr. Anna Czerner and Dr. Michał Jakubik reminded the young people of the basic facts related to the outbreak, course and end of the Warsaw Uprising and presented the profiles of some prisoners-of-war who were sent to Stalag 344 Lamsdorf, especially emphasising the POW chapter of their fate. Moreover, the presentation aimed to evoke the atmosphere of those events in their psychosocial and especially emotional dimension.
After that, Maciej Żemojcin explained the essence of supporting creative activities with technologies allowing advanced image virtualisation, such as applications based on AI algorithms. Our guest also outlined a work plan, drawing the seminar participants' attention to specific tasks to be performed in the field, i.e. in three specific locations in Łambinowice: at the railway station, at the junction of Obozowa and Muzealna Streets and among the post-camp relics of Stalag 318/VIII F (344) Lamsdorf.
After returning to the Museum, the students, using their own photographs and 3D scans, as well as archival photographs from the Museum's collection, and while working under the supervision of the expert, managed, among other things, to remaster the photographs and did their final editing using AI applications and graphics softwares. The result of the workshop is video footage - one from each of the above locations. The videos are planned to be published, but after they are fine-tuned.
This is not the end of our cooperation with the students of school of fine arts in Opole - the implemented now project envisages the creation of an art installation inspired by the route covered by Warsaw insurgents to the Lamsdorf camp. We will keep you informed about the progress of the work.
The activity, carried out as part of the project, was financed from funds of the National Reconstruction and Resilience Plan - investment A2.5.1. ‘Programme to support the activities of entities from the cultural and creative industries sector to stimulate their development’, and the Self-government of the Opole Province.
