Representatives of the Museum attended the 80th anniversary of the establishment of the State Museum at Majdanek

The State Museum at Majdanek was established as the first institution in the world to commemorate the victims of the Second World War - it began its activity as early as October/November 1944. In order to mark this fact, the Museum prepared a two-day programme of events, in which Dr. Violetta Rezler-Wasielewska and Dr. Renata Kobylarz-Buła participated.

On the first day of the commemorations, 23 October, nearly 200 people representing various circles - from former KL Lublin prisoners, through people from the realms of culture and science, to local politicians - met at the Lublin Conference Centre.

A special moment of the event was certainly the awarding of medals and decorations. By the decision of the President of the Republic of Poland, fifteen workers of the State Museum at Majdanek were awarded Crosses of Merit and Medals for Long Service for their distinguished work, and on behalf of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage, Hanna Wróblewska, the deputy director, Grzegorz Plewik, was awarded with the ‘Decoration of Honor Meritorious for Polish Culture’. The institution itself was also honoured - by the local authorities - for its ‘outstanding contribution to the city of Lublin’.

Today, moreover, there was held a scientific conference entitled ‘The Past in Museums - Museums in the Future’. Event partners were: the National Institute of Museums and the National Centre of Culture.
