Opening of ‘The Shadow was only left’ exhibition – report

Yesterday, 9 December, the opening of ‘The Shadow was only left’ exhibition took place on the premises of the bustling railway station in Opole. This is the next task of the project ‘Reverberations 1944. From Warsaw to Lamsdorf’. Its aim is to draw attention to the circumstances of the transportation of the Warsaw insurgents - POWs of the Wehrmacht by means of art. The project was initiated by the Museum in collaboration with the Public High School of Fine Arts in Opole.

The ceremonial opening of the exhibition was attended, among others, by representatives of the High School: Katarzyna Kubik, the institution's director and art history teacher, together with her deputy and project supervisor from his sculptor’s studio, Robert Suchiński; Aleksander Iszczuk, head of the Opole Department of Education; and representatives of the Polish State Railways: Monika Cisicka, manager of the Opole Main Railway Station, and Sylwia Jaeschke, spokesperson of the Opole branch of POLREGIO SA train operator.

The first strong accent of the meeting was the public listening to the Prologue of the radio drama related to historical events ‘We were here’. After the broadcast of this poignant material, Dr. Renata Kobylarz-Buła, deputy director of the Museum, took the floor to present the idea of the exhibition in the context of the ‘Reverberations 1944 ...’ whole project and to show a historical portrait of the group of prisoners-of-war illustrated by the creators of the exhibition. After that, Robert Suchiński spoke about the behind-the-scenes work on the creation of the installation - including an explanation of the techniques used in it and emphasising the full independence of the students in the creation process. The final item on the programme was a conversation with the project participants and audience initiated by Dr. Anna Czerner - focused on the potential of art as a tool for working through difficult history.

‘The Shadow was only left’ art installation will be on view until 19 December 2024. You are cordially invited to come and see the exhibition!

The activity, carried out as part of the project, was financed from funds of the National Reconstruction and Resilience Plan - investment A2.5.1. ‘Programme to support the activities of entities from the cultural and creative industries sector to stimulate their development’, and the Self-government of the Opole Province.
