Museum at the Opole Voivodeship Festival - report

This year's traditional celebration of the achievements and attractions of the Opole region taking place in the charming village of Moszna was attended by perhaps even more institutions, companies and organisations than during the last year's Voivodship Festival. The number of people was as high as ever – many families with children, local residents, as well as persons from outside the region, for example, the neighbouring Upper Silesia or the Dąbrowa Basin.

Our stand with the presentation of the current Museum’s activities was under one exhibition canopy with other cultural institutions run by the Opole Province Marshal: the Józef Elsner Opole Philharmonic, the Jan Kochanowski Theatre, the Opole Province Public Library and the Museum of the Opole Village. Presentation of larger number of the Museum’s publications this year was a novelty – some were intended for sale, others, with promotional stickers on, were offered at giveaway prices. The raised funds went to the money box ‘Collection for the conservation of museum monuments’. It turned out that such solution produce a satisfactory result: there were buyers of both regular-priced items and donors willing to contribute to the portable money box.

The programme of the presentation of the Museum revolved also around the interesting form of contests and quizzes inspired by the current temporary exhibitions, and therefore related to commonly available archaeological knowledge, the theme of love in history, culture and pop culture, and the so-called sensory challenge consisting in identifying artefacts using only the sense of touch, and then trying to determine the possible date of the object. The latter contest brought a lot of excitement, and we will certainly continue it, with some changes, on similar occasions.

Attendance at the event was surprisingly high and, despite many competing attractions (especially for children), we managed to attract the attention of even the youngest, for example, thanks to the promotion of the temporary exhibition ‘I love You, See You…’: heart-shaped stickers inspired by the exhibition met with success, as well as the opportunity to take a photo with the emblematic Teddy The Bear and finding out about his connection to the stories we tell in the exhibition.

As a result, almost all the prizes we had prepared ended up in the hands of the Sunday audience at Moszna, and we returned with the conviction that even during events with rather ludic, casual, settings, there is still room for an educational mission and promotion of the Museum and the Site of Remembrance.
