Prisoner of War Camps Museum
Prisoner of War Camps Museum in Żagań is an institution of culture run by the local government. Its organizer is the City of Żagań. The Museum was established in 1971 on the grounds of the former POW camp – Stalag C Sagan. It deals with commemorating the POWs detained in this place in different periods of its history, in particular those interned in Stalag Luft 3 designed for airmen of USAAF and The Royal Air Force. On the night of 24 and 25 March 1944, the camp saw one of the best-prepared breakouts by 76 POWs through the tunnel ‘Harry’. The event known as ‘The Great Escape’ went down in history, being exploited in many publications and film adaptations.
