Cracow’s lecture of Dr. Piotr Stanek during Days of Remembrance for Victims of the Gestapo

This is for the eighteenth time that the Days of Remembrance for Victims of the Gestapo have been commemorated in Cracow. The purpose of the Days of Remembrance is to recall the fate of the Varsovians who found temporary shelter in Cracow after the fall of the uprising in 1944. This year, the commemorations are particularly connected with the 80th anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising.

The Days of Remembrance for Victims of the Gestapo took place from 12 to 16 September in Cracow, offering many events, such as exhibition presentations, lectures, an educational walk and an outdoor urban game for young people. On the third day of the event, a scientific session was held, during which, among other speakers, Dr. Piotr Stanek from our Research Department gave a lecture entitled Five years ago, it was a matter of honour not to be taken prisoner. Today, it is the honour to go into there. Warsaw insurgents in camps run by the Wehrmacht. The title quote comes from the memoirs of liaison officer Alina Karpowicz, codename Miła [Pleasant One].

During his presentation Dr. Stanek focused on the attitudes of the insurgents in captivity. He paid particular attention to examples highlighting their soldierly identity and their efforts to respect the rights of prisoners-of-war. The attitudes discussed were crucial to building the morale of the insurgents, which became the central theme of the speech. During the Saturday academic sessions, there was also time for numerous questions and discussions, in which history enthusiasts eagerly participated.
