Conservation treatment of the sculptures of the Monument to the Martyrdom of Prisoners-of-War

The sculptures embellishing the Monument to the Martyrdom of Prisoners-of-War have been taken down in the recent days. After 60 years since the monument was erected, they are awaiting conservation treatment.

The project entitled 'Conservation treatment of the sculptures of the Monument to the Martyrdom of Prisoners-of-War in the Site of National Remembrance - Łambinowice' is carried out by the Łambinowice Commune thanks to from the funds received from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage and Governor of the Opole Province, as well as with its own money. Our Museum supported it primarily by initiating the restoration and seeking sources of funding.

The sculptures in question are the work of three visual artists: Marian Nowak, Jan Borowczak and Jerzy Beski. Conservation treatment of the metal figures will be carried out by the Warsaw-based REWARS conservation company, while dismantling was conducted by the company Iwona Piechocka Usługi Budowlane.

The Monument to the Martyrdom of Prisoners-of-War is a symbol of commemoration of the soldiers of the anti-Hitler coalition who, during World War II, were held in this one of the largest Wehrmacht camp complexes - the Lamsdorf stalags. The monument, consisting of two pylons with figural sculptures, has been awarded and, owing to its recognisable features, become a distinguishable element of our Museum and its logotype for years.

We will keep you updated on the progress of the conservation work.
