Conservation treatment of the Holy Bible from Lamsdrof

At the beginning of October, the ‘Rewars’ workshop completed conservation treatment of an interesting but badly damaged object We are talking about a book of the New Testament, which came to Stalag VIII B Lamsdorf thanks to the commitment of Father Richard Wingfield-Digby.

The book had lain for many years in the attic of one of the houses in the village of Sowin, next to Łambinowice. Its damage is considerable. The first step in the conservation process was to disinfect the artefact and clean it of surface dirt. With a view to preserve the object for posterity, deacidification of the pages was carried out. The tears in the paper were glued up and the defects left as a sign of respect for the authenticity of the object and its post-camp history.

After the conservation, the object can undoubtedly be displayable. Who knows, maybe in time it will play a new role - that of an exhibit at an exhibition? Before this happens, however, you will be able to read about it in detail in the latest issue of ‘Sketches from the History of the Lamsdorf/Łambinowice Camps. History and Modern Times’, which is in the making now.

The carried out conservation work, which lasted several months, was possible thanks to our cooperation with the Association of Friends of the Central Museum of Prisoners-of-War - it was from its funds that this task was financed.
