Anniversary of the end of World War II and a ŁSM meeting

79 years ago, on 8 May 1945, the Second World War came to an end. This deadliest conflict in modern history was ended with Germany's unconditional surrender. On the day of the National Victory Day celebrated throughout Poland, we recalled these facts at the Site of National Remembrance in Łambinowice.

At 10.00 a.m., at the Monument to the Martyrdom of Prisoners-of-War in Łambinowice, Dr. Anna Wickiewicz and Dr. Michał Jakubik from the CMJW’s Department of Education and Exhibitions, Tomasz Karpiński, mayor of the Łambinowice Commune, and schoolchildren of the local Primary School laid flowers and lit candles.

Later, at 5 p.m., at the seat of the Museum, another "Łambinowice Museum Meeting" took place. It was entitled 'Lamsdorf/Łambinowice. Archaeology at the Site of Remembrance' and was devoted to the presentation of the results of the interdisciplinary research carried out as part of the project 'Science for Society, Society for Science at the Site of National Remembrance in Łambinowice'. Started in 2022 and concluded this year project provided an opportunity to broaden knowledge of the evidence of the Second World War in Łambinowice, and the finds of both small artefacts and elements of the former camp's architecture and, most importantly, POW graves, proved the correctness of the project's assumptions.

Information about the course of work and findings was presented at the meeting by means of a documentary film by Daniel Frymark, a temporary exhibition and an accompanying guidebook to it by Dr. Dawid Kobiałka, Michał Pawleta, Associate Professor of the UAM, and Dr. Kamil Karski. The presentation was enriched by haiku poems and a speech delivered by volunteers who participated in the work - Wiesław Karliński and Krzysztof Kokot.
